In early 2005 the cycling scene in India changed dramatically when Firefox introduced an imported range of approx 30 bike models into the Indian market. The first company owned Firefox Bike Station was opened in Delhi in April 2005. Designed, keeping in mind customer oriented bike & accessories displays & backed by trained sales & technical staff, the Bike Station proved an instant success & provided the template for future expansion. The present count of 8 company owned outlets & more than 60 carefully chosen Franchisee outlets all over India are testament to the success of Firefox's distribution strategy. The present range of almost 70 bike models provides the Bike Stations with the ability to offer bikes to all ages & category of buyers. In June 2006 Firefox teamed up with the finest cycling company in the world, Trek Bicycle Corp, USA& in 2010 this tie-up was further strengthened with the introduction of Gary Fisher Collection. Simultaneously in 2010, Firefox introduced Finish Line (specialists in cycling lubricants) & Slime (specialists in puncture resistant products) to the Indian market. The Trail Continues.

G-Form Products now available in India

Firefox has introduced G-Form products in India.

History of G-Form
G-Form was founded by avid athletes that shared in a common vision of using advanced polymer technology to revolutionize impact protection and vibration dampening for competition.  The founding team included expertise in a wide variety of sports, but perhaps more importantly expertise in polymer chemistry, 3D design, photography, mold making, entrepreneurship, innovation and out-of-the-box thinking.
Rather than have products developed and driven from a “board room” down marketing approach, the team has worked together to make products developed from the athlete’s point of view —  making use of state of the art smart materials and polymers to make products no one previously knew could possibly be made.
While the team has grown exponentially from the early days, and product lines have expanded to electronics protection and military/tactical gear,  the philosophy of  innovation by and for the athlete remains.  In addition to a passion for athletics and creation, the team has always shared the common bond of also working for the community and supporting social causes, and has a goal of setting some records there too.

Biking range:
  • Elbow Pads - The G-Form pads  protects from repeated impacts – unlike a bicycle helmet, it does not need to be replaced after impact, and does not lose any of it’s protective qualities after repeated use.

  • Knee Pads -  The unique way the pad is shaped and molded, plus it’s attachment to the compression fabric, keeps the pad close to the surface of the body, and this enhances the protection, especially compared to hard shell pads that can move out of place.

  • Brakehood Overgrip - G-Form Brake Hood Gel Over-Grips are the first product engineered specifically to dampen the vibration between your hands and the brake hoods. G-Form Pressure Relief Gel reduces the fatigue in your hands, arms, shoulders and neck. Self-adhering, Repositionable, Customizable, Leaves no residue.

How to Box your Bike

Taking your bike away with you on a plane can be a nerving experience. You have invested a heap of coin into your pride and joy and lets face it we have all been sitting in a window seat watching how carefully the baggage handlers look after our luggage!

Materials Needed

Obviously, you’ll need a bike box. These are available at bike shops. Call first to check availability. They'll need to know your bike size to select the right box, too. Another specialty item is a fork protection splitter. This is inserted into the fork to prevent damage. Shops can supply this or you can make one out of a 1- x 1-inch block of wood 100mm long with screws and washers in the ends.

Shops can also provide an axle protector, which is pressed onto the front axle to keep it from poking through the box. Or you can cover the axle with cardboard.

Required Tools:
  • 2 inch-wide packing tape
  • packing material: cardboard, newspaper or bubble wrap
  • string and/or zip ties
  • marker to address the box and cross out old addresses
  • Small cardboard box
  • pedal wrench
  • 4, 5, 6 mm allen keys
  • pliers
  • Rubber mallet
Let's get started:
Before removing the seatpost, wrap a piece of tape around it right at the frame to mark your seat height so you’ll set things right during reassembly.

Remove the pedals by turning the right counterclockwise and the left clockwise (the left pedal is “reverse threaded”). Put the pedals in the parts box.

Remove the front brake. If you have a road bike with sidepull brakes, remove the front brake from the fork reattaching its nut and any hardware (photo) and wrapping it in paper (do not detach the cable).   For linear-pull and cantilever brakes, remove the side of the brake that’s attached to the cable being sure to tape the parts together so they can’t get lost.

Removing the brake like this retains your adjustment and lets the brake move with the handlebars.   Remove the handlebars. If you have a stem that can be opened to remove the handlebars, do so and replace the stem bolts snugging them so they won’t fall out and get lost during shipping (leave the stem in place on the bike).

Be sure to reattach the top cap and spacers noting their position for correct reassembly. Also, install a zip tie (or tape) around the top of the fork just above the top spacer (photo) so it won’t rattle or fall out of the frame.

Remove the front wheel. Unscrew the quick release, extract it from the hub and then reassemble it and place it in the parts box. Press the axle protector into both sides of the axle. Put the fork protection block in place between the dropouts.

Tie the bike/wheel together. With the bike resting on the ground, place the wheel next to the left side of the bike. You can use either string of large zipp ties for this.

Position the handlebars. If you’re packing a bike with flat bars, you can usually fit the bars on top of the top tube and wheel. Place them so they’re as narrow as possible so the bike will pass through the box opening. And make sure that no part of the bars or stem can bang into the frame or rim. Add padding if needed.

Then tie the bars in place. For dropped handlebars, try putting them under the top tube and partly inside the wheel (photo) or try resting the hooks on the top tube with the levers facing up. You may need to fine-tune the placement when the bike is in the box if the levers protrude too far.

Levers are fragile and expensive, so situate them safely, padding them if necessary. Also, pay attention to the cables and housing so you don’t kink them. Maintain loops in the housing and keep trying until you find a handlebar position that’s safe.

Now you can box it! Tape your parts box shut and place it in the bottom of the bike box (it’s a good idea to attach the box to the bike so it can’t move around). Rotate the fork 180 degrees, which will make the package a little shorter. Now, lift the bike and place it into the box so that the parts box ends up just behind the fork.   Wrap the seat/seatpost, rest it on the rear wheel and tie it to the wheel so it can’t get loose and bang up your bike. Pack aero handlebars similarly or wherever they fit best.   If you removed it, tie or tape the front brake so it can’t bang into anything. Then close and securely tape the box shut (don’t forget the bottom).

Don’t forget to pack the tools and materials needed to repack the bike for the return trip. At the other end if you have no where to store the box you can always pick up another from the LBS ( local bike shop) to save you from storing the box.

Remove the pedals, seat and seatpost. To prevent injury, use pliers to remove any loose large staples in the box top (often used to seal boxes at the factory). Use the small cardboard box to keep the small parts in to avoid them flying around in the box and scratching up your frame, or worse still falling out. . Shift the bicycle chain onto the small chainring and largest rear cog. This keeps the rear mech out of the road and lessens the risk of the derailleur hanger getting bent.

Follow these easy tips and your pride and joy should arrive in one piece.

A group of cyclists tour the south to promote health and happiness

UDHAGAMANDALAM: Seventy cyclists who rolled out of Bangalore last Friday on an 8-day expedition, 'Tour of Nilgiris' covering mountain ranges in Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu, are to reach Ooty on Thursday, finishing their last stretch of about 46 km from Ooty to Kodanad View Point near Kotagiri in the Nilgiris, on Friday.
The annual cycling event organized by the Bangalore-based Ride A Cycle Foundation (RAC-F) is such a hit that within an hour, the online registration closed on June 1. "This is the fourth edition of the RAC-F. About 350 aspirants registered for the expedition out of which we chose 70 based on fitness and cycling experience," said Sridhar Pabbisetty, one of the co-founders of RAC-F and COO of the Centre for Public Policy, IIM, Bangalore.
According to him, age is no bar for the expedition. The riders include three women, expats and foreign nationals from the US and Italy, ranging from 14 to 60 years. Among them, three cyclists , Arun De'sylva, Chacko and Vishnu Navda are riding to support the social initiatives undertaken by Aarohi (Uttarakhand), BR Hills Tribal School and Wayanad Girijana Seva Trust.
With seven support vehicles including three motorbikes and an ambulance with a doctor and a physiotherapist, the seventy riders will pedal at least 860 km in eight days from Bangalore through Mysore, Hassan, Madikeri, Kannur, Sultan Bathery, Ooty and Kodanad. The riders are also accompanied by 30 support staff members who have undergone a workshop in first-aid.
According to Sridhar, in 2008, five cyclists planned a long ride along the Nilgiris. They were joined by 45 others. In the next edition, the number climbed to 70 and hit the century mark last year. "In all the four editions of the annual bicycle expedition, the riders comprised of students, army personnel and professionals from IT, corporate and health sectors.
Besides hitting a maximum height of 2,240 metres at Doddabetta in the Nilgiris, the highest peak in Tamil Nadu, the riders have crossed three wildlife sanctuaries including, Bandipur, Vynad and the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve apart from the Western Ghats. "They have pedaled at least 110 - 120 km a day barring rest days," Sridhar said.
To make the breathtaking ride challenging, RAC-F has added a 'race component' this year. Every day, those finishing 30-40 km distance first would win a diving package for a couple to the Andaman Islands. "With the race sections being introduced this year, there has been highly spirited planning between participants to form teams and outpace each other," Sridhar said.
Stating that the event is essentially aimed at reviving the cycling culture and its benefits to the masses including social, health, environment, tourism, traffic and urban transport, Sridhar said, "The cycling tour is a serious circuit for seasoned cyclists".
"Cycling as an extreme sport is becoming popular, and this annual cycling tour has put India on the global cycling map. The participation of foreign nationals testifies to this. It can be considered India's Tour de France," said Rajesh Nair, co-founder of RAC-F.

Precautions - Cycling in the dark, fog or winter months

You should take extra precautions to make sure that you are safe when cycling in the dark. As long as you have a few essential items like light, reflective clothing and reflectors on your bike, there's nothing to stop you pedalling the night away!
Follow the advice on this page to help you stay safe when cycling in the dark.

Plan your route

Traffic-free routes, which feel safer during the daytime, may not be well-lit at night. If you know you are going to be cycling at night, it's worth thinking ahead and making sure that your route has street lighting. Sometimes it's safer to cycle on the road.
You should also think about parking you bike in a well-lit area.

Watch out for hazards more carefully

Traffic isn't the only hazard at night. Watch out for uneven surfaces and potholes, animals, pedestrians in dark clothing and other cyclists without lights. Look for them carefully and give them a wide berth when you see them.

Think about safety when turning right

If you want to turn right, it is more difficult and dangerous to move to the middle of the road when it's dark. Stop on the left hand side and wait for a gap in the traffic before you turn.

Be seen

When cycling in the dark or in the winter when it gets darker earlier, it's even more important to make sure that you are visible so that other road users can see you.

Here are some tips to help you do this:

Lights

  • It is important to have lights on your bike if you are cycling in the dark. It will put you at risk if you cannot be seen and you will be breaking the law.
  • You should have a white light at the front of your bike and a red light at the rear.
  • Even if there are street lights and you can see easily without lights drivers will find if difficult to see you as a cyclist if you do not have lights at night.
  • Lights for your bike should be British Standard BS 6102/3.
  • You should put the lights where they can be easily seen, not hidden behind saddles or framework.
  • It is a good idea to carry spare batteries and bulbs with you in case they run out when cycling along.
  • If you see other vehicles using their light, use yours.
  • Remember, if you are using dynamo powered lights they will go out when you stop, so road users will not be able to see you. You can buy dynamo lights which have a backup 'standlight' when you are stopped.

Reflectors

  • Reflectors are also a good idea to be seen more clearly at night on you bike.
  • You are required by law to have a red reflector at the rear of your bike.
  • You should also have amber reflectors should on your pedals.
  • Reflectors should meet British Standard BS 6102/2.
  • Make sure your reflectors are clean at all times.
  • You can also make your bike more visible by adding spoke reflectors.

Clothing

  • Fluorescent or bright clothing helps you to be seen during the daytime, especially in dull weather.
  • Reflective strips on coats, trousers and trainers can help you to be to be seen at night.

Other reflective items

  • If you have no reflective clothing to wear at night, wear something white-coloured to increase your visibility.
  • You can also add reflective items such as stickers, or slappits to dark clothing or bags to improve your visibility.

FIREFOX TEAM - conquer India's toughest rally MTB HIMACHAL 2011

The duo beat 104 riders from all over the world. They say similar trails in their country, better techniques and bikes helped them come up trumps

After defeating 104 participants from 17 countries, two Nepalese cyclists conquered India's toughest cycling rally on Sunday, October 9. But winning the title was not a cake walk for them. Pedalling for hours on the snow for the last six months helped Ajay Chettri Pandit and Nirjala Tamrakar Wright to take the lead and claim the trophy of Hercules MTB Himachal cycling rally. Although both the riders have won this competition before, every time the dirt trail in Himachal comes up with new challenges for them.

Tough enough? Ajay Pandit Chhetri

"I started practicing for this event in the month of April. I tried to pedal on the most difficult terrains. I travelled to the US, United Kingdom and South Korea to practice for the event. MTB Himachal has always been challenging," said 23-year-old Ajay Chettri Pandit at Firefox cycle bike station in Rajouri Garden. According to Pandit, the climate and terrain in Nepal is quite similar to India, which helped them secure the win.

"There are many Indian cyclists who have a chance to win but they need to concentrate on their technique as well as bikes. In such a competition, one needs good technical support. Thankfully, I had a great team which assisted me at all times," explained Pandit.

Nirjala T Wright, a professional cyclist from Nepal who has been pedalling professionally for 11 years, has represented her country in the Olympics. Married to a British national, she has now moved to England, with better prospects for her sporting career. "This is certainly a very tough and adventurous rally, with the track being one of the most thrilling in the world," says the professional rider, who is a regular at events in the UK, Europe and the USA. She has won the event for the third time and hopes to come back each time the rally is organised.

Big dream
Nepal's intrepid woman biker Nirjala Tamrakar Wright says she's aiming for a hat-trick of wins and now she is trying hard to get a wild card entry into the London Olympics. She has bagged the winner's title in one of India's toughest rallies in 2009 and 2010 and hopes to do it for the third time this year.

"This time I was concentrating more while traversing the toughest off-road tracks as they can harm me as well as my machine," said Nirjala, member of Firefox team, who was riding a carbon fiber bike. "Cleaning and repairing the bike after completing every leg, then taking a long rest and preparing the mind for the next day's grind are important for completing the event successfully.

The track was very technical, single and muddy as it rained heavily while the race was on. It was mentally challenging. You can't see much as you have to clean your eyes time and again to remove mud," said Nirjala. Up next is the Langkawi International Mountain Bike Challenge - the Tropical Rainforest Challenge 2011 - to be held in Malaysia on October 18.
